RATING: PERFECT - 100/100
A lot of the time there's something "off" (I find anyways) about 2000s SNL performances. It'll be the sound quality most of the time, but there's also the times where you get a performance that stands out for being... unfavorable.
Lady Gaga was not one of these performances. Her performance during the season finale of SNL's 36th season was one for the books, and she made her mark as one of the greatest performances on the show that I have seen so far.
I firmly believe that Gaga is one of the greatest singers, performers, and entertainers of all time. She has solidified her status as a music legend, doing so with just her first album alone - but her SNL performance was truly something else.
The episode was broadcasted on May 21st, 2011 - and the host was Justin Timberlake. Gaga shared sketches with Timberlake which was very fun to see, but her performance is what really stood out.
Her dancing, outfits, and vocals were all completely top notch here. The stage was designed black and gold for her - it's rare to see a stage switch for performances on the show, so this added an extra layer of cool to her performance.
Her vocals are absolutely stunning and show that she can sing just as well live as she can on her studio work, and her choreography, dancers, energy, and clothing were all absolutely stunning. For her first segment, she was wearing a leather bodysuit with black and blue leather boots (attached by garters). Her bodysuit had gold detailing on it and the most stunning puffy sleeves - it was absolutely show-stopping.
Gaga's fearlessness when it comes to experimenting and having her own style is one of the things that makes her such an incredible performer. This performance was unlike anything else I had seen on SNL, and her artistry is on full, beautiful display throughout her entire block of time.
Her first track was 'Edge of Glory', which she performed sitting at a piano with a reflective, golden headpiece with eyes engraved onto it sat atop her black and white bob haircut. This "slower" start to her performance showed off her beautiful vocals and her range. She hits some absolutely stunning notes and it's enough to almost move you to tears. Her vocal range is absolutely breathtaking and her live vocals are so beyond impressive. She gave this performance every fiber of her being and it turned out to be something so incredibly memorable and truly stunning.
She gets up from her piano and performs 'Judas', breaking out into beautifully put together choreography while still singing - and singing beautifully.
Her performance was met with heavy cheers and applauds, and she soon returned to the SNL stage with one of her most iconic tracks - 'Born This Way'. She's still in leather, but she changed her hair and her outfit is new, and she starts the track by being born out of a pod.
Her vocals are once again breathtakingly gorgeous, and the choreography is well put together and very well done. Her dancing is full of energy and passion while she continues to sing the song - only occasionally having the tracks vocals played while she danced (which doesn't seem uncommon for SNL, or any performance).
Something that REALLY stands out about this performance is the ending of it, she is shown with a leather pregnancy stomach that was attached to her during the performance, and she is sitting in a birthing chair. Golden fluid is seen spilling onto the chair as one of the most legendary performances in SNL history comes to a close.
