SCORE: 95/100. NEAR PERFECT.
THIS is where Tina Turner became TINA TURNER. The fierce, powerful rockstar and icon that we all know and love was born with her second solo studio album, 'Acid Queen'.
'Acid Queen' was released sometime in August of 1975 - making it 50 years old just a year from now. This album was the last album Tina would make before her split with then-husband and music partner Ike Turner. This split would lead to her becoming a fully solo artist with her departure from the duo efforts of the then-husband and wife duo Ike & Tina Turner.
In terms of sound this is a mix of rock, funk, psychedelia sounds, and soul & blues. Tina effortlessly mixes and blends between these genres and does what she was clearly meant to be doing with her music. With the production alone and the way the instrumentals come together this is one of the best albums I have listened to lately.
Tina's vocals are absolutely showstopping. Her sound is completely unique from other singers and she has an instantly recognizable voice that sets her far apart from other artists from her time. Her vocals alone make her music so worthwhile, but the production of this album really sticks too.
'Acid Queen' is primarily a cover album like her debut album was - but this time it is mostly covers of rock songs by bands like The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin. The album has been re-released numerous times and was also only put on digital streaming services in November of 2023, not even a year ago.
There's everything you could possibly want on an album here. Synths, rock, blues, slower songs, fast, upbeat tracks. This album has it all and it's like a 35 minute show that just keeps going and going without any sign of the energy being dampened.
This album shows an incredibly promising rise of quality and fierceness for Tina. Her personality and artistry is on full show on this album and she puts on one hell of a show on the songs, singing her heart out for every line and showing the world that she is TINA TURNER. This is the first album I've listened to in a while where I felt like it was just flying by.
